You might think this is a strange time of year to buy seeds and for those of you who've lost plants because of the heat-wave and drought, maybe you feel like giving up for the year.
Hopefully I can inspire you as there's so much you can sow at the moment which might help your garden bounce back quicker next year. Please see below for reasons to sow 😊

- Some perennial plants need cold stratification before they'll germinate. This just means they need a good few months of cold temperatures before they'll do their thing, These need to be sown in autumn and you should see lots of little seedlings popping up in spring, usually March.
Our varieties that need this treatment are Betony, Devil's-bit Scabious, Marsh-mallow, Meadowsweet, Wild Carrot, and Welsh Poppy.
- A lot of annual flowers, the ones that are hardy, benefit from a late summer / early autumn sowing. If you sow in September, they spend their winter establishing roots which gives them a huge advantage over other plants come spring and you get stronger plants and earlier flowering. If you're not convinced, you can always sow some seeds now and save some for a second sowing next year.
Choose from Borage, Californian Poppy, Corn Chamomile, Corncockle, Cornflowers, Crimson Flowered Flax, Gypsophila, Limnanthes, Nigella, Phacelia, Pot Marigold, Red Field Poppy and Virginia Stock.
- Yellow Rattle: A very pretty plant that Bumblebees love, this is the plant that helps to reduce the vigour of grasses in meadows so that wildflowers can get established. This is an annual that needs cold stratification so can only be sown in late summer and autumn for successful germination. The seeds also need to be fresh as they don't keep that well, (ours are from the 2026 harvest and will be back in stock very shortly, hopefully this week)
- Meadow Mixes: Autumn is the perfect time to sow meadow mixes especially into grassed areas. The growth of the existing grass will slow down now giving the Meadow Mix plants an advantage plus the higher moisture levels will help with germination and prevent the need for watering. We have two different Meadow Mixes in various packet sizes.
