Nettle forms large patches of upright stems with dark green leaves.  The foliage is covered with stinging hairs and there are catkin-like flowers produced from late spring into autumn.

Although maybe not the prettiest plant, a very useful one which is still used in herbal medicine.

It also makes a very good, (free but stinky), garden fertiliser.

A very good plant to have in your garden for its benefits to wildlife, especially for Butterflies and Moths, many of which lay their eggs on it where it subsequently provides food for their caterpillars.

Common Stinging Nettle attracts / provides food for the following creatures:

  • Butterfly caterpillars including: Comma, Painted Lady, Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell and Red Admiral.
  • Moth caterpillars including: Angle Shades, Bright-line Brown-eye, Buff Ermine, Burnished Brass, Dot Moth, Flame, Garden Tiger, Ghost Moth, Jersey Tiger, Mother of Pearl, Setaceous Hebrew Character, Silver Y, Snout, Spectacle and White Ermine.
  • Ladybirds are attracted by aphids sheltering in the leaves.
  • Seed-eating birds.

All our seed packets include sowing instructions.

Jemima’s Garden seeds are plastic free and reyclable. They’re contained in an inner glassine envelope, (made from pine wood cellulose), and an outer paper seed packet. Any shipping packaging is also plastic free and recyclable.
