Basil – Sweet Genovese - Ocimum basilicum

Type: Tender Annual

Approximate height: 45 - 60 cm

Site and soil type: Moist, well-drained soil in sun

When to sow: Indoors from March to June and do not plant out until all risk of frost is gone

Bright aromatic green leaves with white flowers. Use to flavour pesto, pizzas, ratatouille and pasta sauces.

Tips: Water Basil plants in the morning, water the compost rather than watering the leaves. Basil will do better in a large pot in a greenhouse or conservatory rather than outside in the garden

Sowing instructions:

Fill a seed tray or pot with peat-free compost and sprinkle the seeds finely over the surface.

Alternatively a tray with separate modules or cells can be used. Fill each cell with compost and sow a pinch of seed into each one. Cover the seed with finely sieved compost or vermiculite. (Use just enough to cover all the seeds.) Keep in a warm place, out of direct sunlight, (between 18-20° C is ideal.) When the seedlings have emerged continue to water sparingly but do not allow to dry out.

When the seedlings have grown their first true leaves, (the first 2 are called seed leaves and may be a different shape to the true leaves), carefully transplant the seedlings into small pots filled with compost. If grown in modules there is no need to separate the individual seedlings and the whole “clump” in the module can be transplanted to a small pot.

When the plants have grown sufficiently they can be planted into larger pots or direct into the garden once all danger of frost has passed.
