Site and soil type: Prefers rich moist soil in sun but will tolerate most soils and conditions.
When to sow: March to May outdoors, anytime indoors
Mild onion flavoured grass-like leaves with very pretty (edible) purplish/pink globe flowers. Fresh chopped leaves can be added to salads, sauces, omelettes etc. wherever a mild onion flavour is required.
The flowers are very attractive to bumble bees.
Can be sown indoors all year round by placing a pinch of seed in a small pot of compost, lightly covering with about 0.5 cm of further compost, watering and keeping warm, about (15-20°C). Can be sown outdoors from March to May. Sow directly into fine soil 0.5 cm deep.
