Clary Sage - Salvia sclarea
Approximate height: Up to 1 metre
Flowering time: Summer
Site and soil type: Moist but well-drained soil in sun
When to sow: Late spring to early autumn
Clary sage is also known as clear eye and see bright.
A beautiful, tall plant with strongly scented large wrinkly leaves and very pretty pale pink flowers and mauve bracts.
The flowers are very attractive to bees. In 2020, when we still lived in Norfolk, our garden was visited several times by a rare violet carpenter bee. One of the plants it always made a beeline for, (sorry), was the clary sage.
Clary sage is a biennial plant which means it will produce leaves in its first year and flower in the second. Biennials often die after flowering in their second year so allow the plant to set seed to produce plants in following years.
