Lemongrass seeds - Cymbopogon flexuosus - Culinary herb
Lemongrass seeds - Cymbopogon flexuosus
Type: Tender Perennial
Approximate height: Up to 1.5 m
Site: Full sun
When to sow: Spring
Also known as East-Indian lemongrass or Malabar
This variety has a strong scent and flavour.
It is best used fresh and the base of the stems can be chopped and used in curries or added to sauces to give a citrusy flavour. The leaves can also be used to make a tea.
To harvest, cut entire stems as needed, trim off the leaves and keep the bottom 8 to 10 cm.
Start seeds indoors. Sow thinly on the surface of either small pots or seed module trays filled with peat free compost.
Press the seeds down gently and do not cover. Water the container from below by placing in a tray of water and then keep warm at approximately 20°C, (a heated propagator is ideal).
When seedlings are large enough to handle pot on into small pots, (about 3 seedlings per pot), and place in a bright spot indoors.
Re-pot the plants into a larger pot when roots appear through the bottom of the existing pot.
The plants can then be placed outside in a sunny position and kept well-watered. Lemongrass is not hardy in the UK and although it can be planted in the garden it is best kept in containers so that it can be brought back inside for the winter.
Bring back indoors in late summer and keep in a cool but bright position. Reduce the watering; the compost should be just moist.
In autumn, when the foliage turns brown it can be cut back to about 10cm tall.
Feed in spring when new growth appears using a liquid fertiliser, (I recommend a seaweed based feed) and re-pot to a larger container if roots have appeared through the bottom of the pot.
