New Garden

New Garden!

We arrived here in Dumfries and Galloway, in the middle of March, to our new home and more importantly, a new garden.

Our last garden was quite large, very wild and had a lot of wildlife. It was surrounded by mainly arable farmland some of which was sprayed with who knows what several times a year but after 13 years of using no chemicals in the garden itself, it had a thriving eco-system.

The new garden is a bit different. It's smaller, and although a bit overgrown with bramble and ground elder, underneath it's a traditional garden with pretty shrubs like chamellia and magnolia etc.
We're in a very small village which is surrounded by countryside which has more livestock farming than arable so hopefully we've got away from the blanket spraying.

We are determined to make this garden as wildlife friendly as possible and will be starting with some gentle clearing and  planting of a lot of herb and wildflower plants.  From now on there will be no pesticides or weed killers used.

There are a few promising plants already here, like this willow, which is usually very popular with bees when flowering.

The best news is we put a bird feeding station up and within a few days we have a steady stream of visitors. Rooks on a bird feeder are a first for us but sadly they've refused to be photographed as yet.

Unfortunately there is no room in the new garden for me to continue growing plants on a commercial basis but my seeds are still available and we're planning to expand the range with many more varieties on offer.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and if you'd like to know how we get on with our "wilding" plans, please come back soon for updates.
